Burger Archives Specialist

The Burger Archives Specialist serves as the specialist in photographs and artifacts. This includes establishing and implementing standards for the care, handling, description, and preservation of photographs and artifacts, both for the Burger Collection and the general SCRC collections; serves as exhibit designer and installer; trains and supervises several student workers; in consultation with the Burger Archivist establishes best practices for artifact care; determines the best method for displaying items ensuring their well-being, seeking advice and approval of the Exhibits Committee Chair.


Core Duties and Responsibilities:
Install exhibits by published opening dates; assist with the design of Special Collections, Library-wide, or University-wide exhibits; collaborates in exhibit preparation, selecting artifacts and other materials; writing label copy for exhibits and handling the placement of the objects on exhibit; analyzes items to determine their function in exhibits; prepares items and performs research for label copy; coordinates the loan of Swem items to museums and other institutions for exhibits and maintains exhibit items in good condition through the exhibit dates.

This position analyzes, describes and re-houses materials within the Burger Collection through application of professional judgment; provides Special Collections reference, either at the front desk as assigned or as requested to provide coverage when other staff are absent; plans desk coverage when not available; gives occasional tours to visitors being punctual and reliable; uses knowledge of collections to assist researchers; answer e-mail and/or written research requests as assigned; courteous, helpful and professional when assisting researchers; adheres to Special Collections reference procedures; helps in collaborative efforts to accomplish specific tasks.

This position establishes and implements standards for the care, handling, description, and preservation of artifacts in the general SCRC collections; identifies items to be removed from University Archives and from manuscript collections for re-housing as artifacts; trains and supervises student workers and interns in caring for, cataloging, and preserving photographs and artifacts.


Required Qualifications:

This position requires - knowledge of archival practices and procedures and the ability to understand indexing and cataloguing procedures; knowledge of basic preservation principles and conservation skills and the ability and dexterity of hand skills needed to execute the appropriate collection care; the ability to prioritize and work independently; computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite and experience with databases; ability to perform detail work, to edit and proofread; supervisory ability; ability to communicate effectively with both internal and external constituencies. High school degree or equivalent. Must meet physical requirements for the job.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree preferred. Prior experience in an archives, library or museum preferred. Some supervisory experience desirable.
